The Income Tax Department issues a 10-digit alphanumeric number to individuals or businesses – in the form of a laminated card. It is unique to each individual or company and is called our Permanent Account Number (PAN). It does not change when you change your address – even when you shift to another state. It is non-transferable and an individual cannot own more than one PAN card.
The PAN Card serves as a universal identification number that helps the IT department to link and track all the documents and information related to financial transactions such asloans, investments, buying and selling of property or jewellery by tax payers. Hence, it becomes a non-intrusive way to ensure that you do pay all your taxes in time.
